Understood thanks for all the help guys, by the way isnt the reason net books use windows 7 starter is for its low resource count? If not I think im just going to load ultimate on it...
The reason they use Starter is because it cost like $5 (for OEMs) with all the restrictions. I have a Dell Mini 10v, see "Other Info" in My System Specs, and put Ultimate on it. Now here is the key part, YOU WANT TO BE RUNNING AERO. Starter does not have Aero so you need at least Home Premium. Other then that it does not matter which version you use. They all perform the same.
Ok well I just tried out 7 Ultimate on it and it was a little to slow for my taste so Im currently putting xp back on it.
How come the xp installation part "setup is copying files" is taking so long? Windows 7 Installed via usb in about 23 minutes.....
I was googleing around and supposedly I need a smartdve.exe file or somthing?
The reason Windows 7 installs faster is because it uses images (like Norton Ghost?) and the expanding part, de-compressing is what takes most of the time.
wim files are not 100% images. the Wim format is available via wikipedia and other sources, such as MS.
If you download and install the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) then you will find a complete discussion of the Wim format and the tools to generate and modify a WIM file.
However, since I've installed both xp and win 7 to a netbook, I can say that the install time difference was insignificant. True, in both cases I installed a download from TechNet.
Maybe I'll actually clock the times the next time I go thru those gryations. I've never worried about the install times since the end result was more important to me.
True, I ended up fixing the crazy install lag by formating my usb with the FAT16 LBA Format in wintoflash. XP install is now flying!!! : )
