One of the best utilities with registry cleaner that I have found is www.ccleaner.com. Definetly would reccommend this software to everyone.

Hello Jverse,

Yes, CCleaner is an excellent program, however when I ran it on Windows 7, it listed many file extensions that stated were invalid and to remove them.

If I had done that, some of my programs would be crippled.

The temp and junk files cleaner does do and excellent job though.

I have used Registry mechanic for years and I have never had a problem removing entries. It also has a compact the registry feature and also creates a restore point before the cleaning.

This program is not free and I don't know what the limitations of the trial version are, but you can download it here:

Registry Mechanic® 8 for Windows®

It runs on both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

I 100% agree with reghakr.

Ccleaner is an excellent utility but only for cleaning your hard disk. The registry cleaner showed that i had errors relating to the .NET framework (see pic), even after installing the .NET framework

I steer clear of registry cleaners, they may talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk

CCleaner works fine with Windows 7. I get the same type of registry errors, but Registry Cleaner, Registry Mechanic, all of them pretty much list the same errors. I have not yet had a problem with CCleaner removing things which caused them to break a program.

As for ATI, the Windows 7 version, May 5th and Catalyst 9.5 are the same drivers. CCC does work in Windows 7.

As for the OP, you speakers begin to make static noise when it freezes, does this occur even when you are not playing any sounds/music?

I will do further research but I beleive those entries are created during installation and removed once completed. But, the included should work fine.

Also, OP, please download hijackthis and post the log please. I would like to take a gander at it as well.

Thanks,
JV

Test updates are just that - a test of the Windows Update system. They don't affect the OS, but will tell Windows Update if it's working properly with Win7.

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, the graphics driver was not the problem, because the computer just crashed again. It does make IE's display rather flickery when there is a lot of client-side scripting happening on the page, but doesn't fix the crashes.

Orbital Shark:
I have installed these updates. I just uninstalled the most recent one and we'll see if that fixes things.

oneextraid:
For better or worse, I have no registry cleaner on this system. Not unless 7 installs one I'm unaware of.

reghakr:
I followed these steps and it says "System Number of events: 5166" but has nothing below that (is that normal?) and no warnings or errors that I can find.

Avien:
I have not been able to verify that it does not do it's white-noise thing when it has no sounds playing, but I have had several occasions where a game was minimized (and hence not playing sounds) or when a video was paused but the computer crashed and it started with the noise.

Jverse:

Windows 7 x64 build 7100

Hey everyone,

Update: The computer just crashed again. Twice. Obviously it's not that test update. Would there be an effect if I uninstalled one or more of the remaining test updates, or is it more likely that something else is the cause? Also, these most recent crahses were both during video playback initiated by double-clicking their respective files. Most recently, I started the playback program separately and then opening the files I needed to play. Is there some way that this could cause the crashes? Thanks for all your help!

Are you using any external drives on your system? Sometimes esata drives conflict with the internal sata drives.

Before attempting any of my suggestion, be sure to create a System Restore Point

I look over HiJackThis logs alot, but since you're using the 64-bit edition, I'm not going to try to translate it for you.

There are a couple things I know that can be disabled with no problems

One would be the Java entries under the Run key. Actually you can go to Start > Run, type msconfig and uncheck all entries temporarily. I notice you don't even have an anti-virus program on your machine.

I looked up Steam and I believe this is the application causing your problems. Truthfully, I would uninstall it.

I would go to Start > Run, and type services.msc. Locate the Steam entry , stop it if it's running, then select Disabled.

regarding all the missing file entries, you can go to Start > Run, and type cmd

Now type sfc /scannow to "hopefully" fix those errors. t

Are you also over-clocking the CPU?
