    Windows 7 (x64) RC crash

    Hey everyone,

I recently installed the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 RC (build 7100). It was working nicely for a week or so, but recently it's been crashing. This seems to happen every few hours (approx. 1.5-4hrs) of use.

I've been wracking my brain to see what I can come up with that could be doing it but to no avail. My drivers have all been updated recently, as has Windows itself and the other software I've been using. For a while I thought it might be some of the applications I've been using, but I've had multiple instances of crashes without each of my suspects running at the time.

The only common thread I've found is that it has been using the displays at varying levels. Sometimes I've been playing standard DVD quality video, sometimes I've been playing games, sometimes I've just been working on Word documents. No matter what I've been doing, the mouse & keyboard stop responding, the displays stop updating (the timers I have running stop), and the speakers start spitting out random noise. I'm not sure what the problem is, but any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,

In order to troubleshoot your problem we need to know more detailed specs of your system hardware.

    1. Go to Start > Run, and type msinfo32. then expand the Components tree and choose a device
    2. Go to Control Panel > Device Manager and look for any entry that has a yellow flag beside it.
    3. Please fill out your computers specs in the User Control Panel here on the site as well. It will then appear next to your name. look at my posting and you'll see the drop-down arrow.

The exact wording of the error message would help greatly.

    Hi reghakr!

I'm not quite sure which detailed specs you're looking for. I have all the specs that I can entered into the website. Perhaps it was taking a little while to update the display?

As for the first thing, I can and did do that, but not knowing which ones may help it seems excessive to post every one of the components.

When it comes to number 2, I did this and there are no yellow flags. I suppose I didn't say before that all the hardware appears to be working properly, but I know I have within a week or so of the most recent drivers for all my hardware.

For number 3, as I said I have all the specs I can filled in. I think there were two that do not apply to my system, but the others are all there and appear when I click the drop-down arrow below my name.

Finally, there is no error message. I've had it blue-screen once (and I didn't think to copy down the error), but generally it just stops responding. None of the human interface devices work, the displays stop updating and the speakers spit out what I could almost call white-noise but fluctuates more than standard static.

Sorry, I'm new to this forum, forgot that info was listed a the bottom.
Regarding The ATI card. The latest drivers are available here, but from what I've heard the CCC does not work on Wuindoiws 7. So, you can just download the driver:
    http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

You might also want to update the chipset for your board

    Intel DP45SG

    Or here:
Intel Desktop Board DP45SG Chipset Software Installation Utility 9.0.0.1008 Windows Vista(x32/x64)/XP(x32/x64)

Let me know how this goes and we'll go from there.

That's fine. About CCC, I have had no problems using it so far using it and since ATI has already put out drivers specifically for Windows 7 I would hope they work correctly. :) I went ahead and downloaded the drivers at their site, though from what I can tell the only changes are to CCC not the driver specifically. I haven't had the computer crash again since, but I haven't given it the time is usually takes to crash so we'll see whether this changes anything later in the day.

For the Intel driver, this is the same version that I already have downloaded and installed, so I'm pretty sure that an outdated driver is not the problem there.

    Thanks for all your help!

Hi Roomon1, welcome to the forums.

Have you recently downloaded the test updates for Windows 7 RC through Windows Update?

Windows Update -> View update history

These have been known to cause issues among a few users, you might want to uninstall them if you have them and see if that helps.

Control Panel -> Programs -> View installed updates

    Hope this helps :)

    Orbital Shark,

I am curious as I downloaded them also.

Do you know exactly what the Test Updates do?

Unfortunately not mate. They had no effect on my installation at all but are not available on builds after 7100 (at least not yet )

Do you have a registry cleaner installed? If so, which one and how often is it scheduled to run?

Try going to Start > Run, and type eventvwr

Now open Windows Logs, choose System and see if any warning Ora error are listed . The most recent should be right at the top.

If found, post back with the event ID.

Since it occurs with applications also, check the Application logs.
