    Black Screen During Post on Cold bootup


    Hey All,
    I have built my computer about 2 months ago now, and had nothing but issues with it, display drivers stopped responding, alot of BSOD (bccode 1a and 50), black screens, lockups and so forth, i have FINALLY read enough forums over this 2 month period to solve majority of problems accept one, Computer runs fine, but every morning on cold bootup it'll start to load POST and then go to a black screen and just stay there unless i reboot the computer and then it'll bootup fine. I will turn off the computer after that and go to work for about 8-10hours come home and turn it on all fine, untill the next day. I have tried new ram, fail safe settings in bios, updated bios to the lastest, bought a new power supply, tried reconnecting everything, unpluged storage harddrive. Only thing i could think of causing the problem is my video card drivers, because as soon as i install the drivers i get "drivers have stopped responding but have recovered" screen would lock up freeze/artifacts and then come back, until i changed my idle clocked from 157/300 to 400/900 and it sorted out that problem, but those settings dont kick in until i reach into desktop, could it be trying to load the ati drivers during post and black screening? Any help on the matter would be much appreciated. If any information is required in helping me please dont hesitate to ask!!

    I will also add that my gut feeling from reading your post is: defective video card.

    The ATI drivers do not kick in until after the BIOS has completed and the OS starts to load. So video errors at the BIOS level are almost always hardware related. Every video card is set up to run in "basic BIOS mode" until it's drivers are initiated. So if the video card blinks out at that basic stage you got troubles.

    Keep in mind that the video card can fail because of other hardware failures, most often the power supply, or RAM, or motherboard itself.

    In addition, the " display driver stopped responding" message is a TDR event. These are also caused by hardware issues but very often the most likely suspect is the video card.

    Your motherboard has two PCI-Express 2.0 x 16 graphics slots. Have you tried the card in the other slot?

    Lemur: think i've solved the BSOD by changing my ram, thank you for the link will keep it in mind for future BSOD's

    TVeblen: i think your on the right track because i tried out my old 9800gtx in this setup and a mates ati 5870 and everything was going fine (that was about a month ago) and i sent the card back to the shop i bought it from and they said they couldn't fault the card running it on benchmarks for 2 days straight and basicly told me to stick it we wont help you.. but i told them the performance of the card is fine just all these other problems, its great in games etc. but in saying that i gave my card to my bother he has a i5 setup and it didn't miss a beat, went great for 2 weeks?. Could it be my mobo? is there any way i can try and fault it before replacing it?

    Dwarf: i tried that about a month ago but was more concerned about that "display drivers stopped responding" at the time and the black screen was the last thing on my mind, so i'll give it a go tonight and see how we go tomorrow.

    To address the TDR events, and possibly your title event, check out the diagnostics listed in this thread: Screen Goes Blank

    Another thing to make sure you do is to "clean install" the video drivers, especially when having video issues: GPU-33: Graphics Driver Installation Instructions for Microsoft Windows 7
