Holy crap - I'm getting increasingly worried about this W7 thing. Today I selected to save a backup to C:\, and then I tried to locate it via File Explorer. But nothing!! Then I searched for it, and despite that I positively instructed the program to put it in C:\ the file ended up in c:\users\myname\AppData\Local\Virtualstore

I have more experiences like this, and it seems as if W7 does its best to block users access to their own files, and like this illustrates makes it difficult/impossible to find things again.

I really hate such an operating system, and cannot see any reason for it, other than possibly trying to protect people against themselves. Often I go to folder options in my manic search for data and turn of "Show hidden OS files" etc., in the vague hope that files could be hidden for me for this reason.

Is it possible to turn this crap file management off alltogether and get something that works the way it did in XP?

Why not just go back to Windows XP then if you cannot handle it? But I let you in on a secret. Windows 7 is not Windows XP and is not as insecure as Windows XP. The reason your ability to write a file to the root of C:\ (or programs that write to Program Files) failed is because it is protected from being written to by under privileged users. Until you elevate an application [right-click > run as admin], that application is ran with standard user privileges. Instead, you should be using you user directory (C:\Users\[username]) that is why it is there.
