i managed to create another user account and transfer all my files to it. at the moment its fine, no more black desktop and icons are all in the right place,not sure why the other account was behaving eratically but hope it stays like that.

I have read this twice and learned a lot. I'm happy things are working. If I may suggest. I would recommend looking at your security programs. How did you get 130 infected files and how can you stop it from happening again.
