Different icon arrangement desktop on start up

I am on windows 7 and recently started up my laptop to find the icons arranged in a different place on the desktop. I rearranged them and restarted, but they went back to being out of place.

Now when I start up my laptop sometimes it shows the icons in the first arrangement and sometimes in second arrangement (the second arrangement of the icons is how I want it) I also get a message saying I am logged in as a default user, even though I use a password and user name.

I am using the same password and user name each time but get different arrangements on my desktop.

Also the desktop image reverts to black not blue, as I set it.

    Anyone can help?

To start run a through anti virus scan
Download and run malwarebytes, after updating. Make sure it is a full scan. If nothing is revealed repost.
    The profile may be corrupt
Try a system restore from before the problem if nothing else is successful

I have deleted the infected files, restarted and changed the background and icons layout but still have the same problem - black desktop background, icons arranged differently and a message saying 'you are logged in in a default profile'. Any further advice?

For a test, set up a new profile. See if the old one is corrupt.

Just to check - is a new profile the same as creating a new account?

I created a new administrator account with a new user name and password (and did not delete the other one) restarted and logged in with the new user and password, but the windows welcome screen stayed on the screen for 10 mins and it wouldnt log in, so i had to pull the battrey out to turn off the laptop

    Any reason why?

See if this solves the problem. If errors run a few times
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You can, also try the system restore from before the problem. You will lose any changes that you made to the OS, after the SR date that you select.
