Good no errors. It is my guess that some software that you are using is causing the problem, find out which.

I have some files that I have created (photoshop etc) since the desktop started behaving irratically. If I did a system restore to when the desktop was fine will it affect my laptop - ie delete the photoshop files that were created since the irratic behaviour?
Yes, all that will changed; if you use the clean boot you can see what software is causing the problem
Are the photoshop files personal documents, if so they will not be changed. I originally read your post to inidicate that they were files to operate photoshop.
If you are concerned you can save them in a finger drive etc.
i have downloaded a photoshop cs3 trial and created photoshop files on it ( the problem with my desktop occured before downloading the photoshop trial) if i were to save all files created since the problem on a usb stick and do a system restore to before the problem then put the files back on, would that be fine?
You can make a system restore point, before doing anything and then go back to that point if not satisified with the final results. System restore changes can usually be undone. I can tell you how it should work, but will not make guarantees.
