I hope so! What a run-around. I currently have three HP machines (one AMD, two Intel) and not a problem with any of them, particularly the AMD workhorse.

I just googled images of the laptop and it looks really nice.

Stop tempting me boo....beside it has all my cookie crumbs on it, porn sites, dirty text messages to you, Derek's home phone number, Carl's typing and spelling software and Topper's dung in the packaging. So I would want a different one!

One thing about "refurbished" machines is the question "why" are they refurbished. Was it a faulty part, repossessed, damaged/scratched or even returned for no reason, etc.

When repairing a "returned" machine has the hdd, cpu etc. been changed to make it a now working unit (are all the replaced parts new ??). Is my OEM OS now legal as these parts may have been replaced. , Why are they reselling it so cheap ?

All these factors contribute to an extended warranty being a good idea. But one thing that many people may not realise is that these extentended warranties are usually not offered from the manufacturer or by the reseller but often by an outside underwriter like an insurance company which make money on the fact that maybe only 1 out of a 100 claim back within the extended warranty period.

This is why regardless of the product (washing machine, TV, fridge etc.) they give you a warranty price which covers the replacement cost which is usually much less than what you paid for it initially, as they've covered the cost from the other 50+ that don't claim.

Most of these companies rely on the fact that the unit should be fit for purpose and outlast the so said extended period.
I work for a large independent internet electrical reseller (which will remain nameless ) and we use companies like this all the time (as this is the norm in our line of business)

One thing I will say though that is if you have a claim, these so called extented warranty companies will do everything in their power to put the blame on yourself, by claiming that you've opened the unit, changed memory and many other excuses to pass the blame and clear themselves of many claims.

Remember these companies have been around for many years and have very large and expensive legal representation so they will try every trick in the book

Believe me --- been there --- done that ---- and read the book ... just a heads up

    Nick is right.
I asked the store and I asked HP if they could look up the records as to "WHY" this item was returned and no one had a answer for it.
Sam's Club warranty has an outside agency to handle the repairs and warranty service for them that is why it was only $40.00 for an extra 3 years.

In the early stage of this game I contacted the support tech group for a question I had about the 25 product key id on the bottom of the laptop that did not match up under Control Panel/System/ and activation and product key. The tech was clueless. HP wasn't any better.
With HP and their outsourcing techs I had to try 3 times to find a tech that spoke clearly and distinctively.

On my drive home I wanted to stop by the Casino and double down with it but then how would I explain to my wife that I didn't have a laptop nor any money to show for it.
I would have been in the Obituary Column the next day!!!

The ball is back in my court again. The pot has just been sweetened.

Just talked to the Electronic Mgr. and went over the scenario of the bate and switch with one of his employees.
He went to the computer and checked it and took the $ amount down so I said how about
$350 + the Sam's 3 year warranty thrown in. I told him to check from his side as to WHY it was returned or if it had been opened for repair.
HP has no record of them having it returned to them. HP warranty runs out May 2011 then Sam's club would kick in.

So my friends, what would you do?
ps. You will not be held responsible for my actions!

$350 and the 3 year warranty. Grab it and whistle a happy tune all the way home.

That is a $1K lappy. The new replacement is $1100 at Sams web site.

Dennis, I get the feeling that you really want this laptop otherwise you would have given up after you returned it.
If you can get at least 1 years warranty go out and buy it, the price is so good that it will be a good investment and you will get your new toy back to play with all over again.
