This is to protect windows. When the Set up screen disappears, press the on switch for 5 seconds. Leave for 30 mins. Plug in the AC adapter swith the wall socket on but do not power up the laptop. Leave and this should charge the battery to 100% of capacity. if not the battery is probably fried!
where can I find the blue set up page?

I think he means press F2/Del/Esc (or whatever key is required) to enter your BIOS and just leave it there.

Thanks Guy, that exactly. Sorry should have been more specific. I know the method i suggested goes against much advice but it does work. I have done it on a number of my meber's laptops and had but one failure and that was an Acer (They had a special offer for 17" screen Acers but the battery was a bit low powered for them.) but I subsequently found there is a well known fault in the connection between the input socket and the actual internal charger which causes a bad connection hence doesn't charge properly. Expensive to put right!

If my memory serves me right, I seem to recall that rechargeable batteries used to say Charge before use. Full performance will be attained after 2-3 full charge/discharge cycles. or similar.
