Some good advice there. Windows 7 will work with just 1GB of RAM, indeed it can work with less, but its performance will not be satisfactory. I therefore recommend that you increase the amount of RAM to 2GB minimum. You will be better off replacing what you have already got with a 2GB kit or a 4GB kit (and hence enabling dual-channel memory, if your motherboard supports it) rather than getting an additional stick to what you have already got, unless you can match the specifications (timings and speed).

You might also try the following:

Disk Cleanup - Open and Use to free up any space on your HDD.

Virtual Memory Paging File - Change - Vista Forums to optimise your paging file (set to System managed size and Automatically manage paging file size for all drives).

Disk Defragmenter - Open and Use to rearrange data/files on your HDD so that it performs more efficiently.

Just a thought, since hes running win7 his machine should already be setup for windows defrag.

The fact you have so little free space can also greatly hinder your performance. Drives are dirt cheap now, so I'd spring for more memory and a larger, faster hard drive.

I would check crucial before you go back to xp. Ram is very inexpensive and chances are you can get another gig for less than $35 shipped. Or check ebay or craigslist if you want it cheaper (with slight risk) Its worth it vs going back to XP!

On a second note...you will have much better system performance with windows 7 on 2gig of ram vs XP on 1 gig. Windows 7 is MUCH better at allocating ram for programs and system use compared to XP.

We aren't talking about RAM drives here...but system RAM. Crucial will tell you how much and what type your board will support, and give you a price. They are usually fairly competitive, but then you'll know what to look for on Ebay or forum boards, etc.

In your specs, you say you are running a core 2 duo. I don't think that RAM for a Core 2 Duo should be hard to find or more expensive at this point.

EDIT - According to your motherboard this is what you need RAM-wise:

DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR400

Looks to be $50 for two 512mb modules on crucial.

I have 1 gig of this ram I pulled from a working machine not too long ago. Send me a PM if you would like to work something out heavily in your favor. I hope this doesn't violate any forum rules, i'm just trying to help you out.
