Mouse control, selecting a shortcut without opening it.

I know everyone loves a fast mouse but this is ridiculous. When I try to manage shortcuts (links) on my desktop, in the FILE MANAGER in Windows 7, it becomes frustrating.

When I try to highlight a link to select it for multiple selecting others, using the CNTL or SHIFT key, it almost always OPENS the link in the browser. I have tried on Control Panel - Mouse, tried SLOW to FAST and it still anticipates me wanting to open the link instead of selecting it.

Any tricks I can fool my OS in slowing down to allow me to highlight a link without immediately opening it?

are you sure you don't have the desktop set to open items with single-click?

Mouse not "honoring" double click to select not open link

    Positive.

Was hoping there was a trick my holding down something to force it to SELECT and retard OPENING, but it loves to OPEN, not select.

So you have confirmed that it is not the single-click setting. i would suggest trying with a different keyboard as a key might be stuck. I would also try in safe mode in case there is some rogue program that is messing with the drivers? not sure...

Can you try a different mouse as well?

Maybe the mouse has a bad switch - maybe it is bounces and you get more than one click when you press down the button once. Does the folder (shown in the image below) work as you think that it should? Click once. Did the folder open?

    Have you tried another mouse.
