Help.. Getting a Default programs error

None of my programs are working. Everything I click returns a message ... this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install or if one is already installed create an association in the Defaults programs control panel.
I go there and set defualt programs but nothing works.
I can use the computer... I just have to do to favorites and open an old webpage and then use it.
Any help with be greatly appreciated.
