All my files damaged after windows 7 install

    Hi all!

I have installed Windows 7 on my pc but now all the files that I had in another partition seem to be damaged. I can't open zip files, images, docs, excels, etc. It always says that the file is damaged or in a format that can't open.

I have tried to open an image in my laptop and I can't either, so I think that the install damaged all the files I had (photos of my life, etc).

Anyone knows why it has happened? any way to fix or recover the damaged files?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

We need a ton more info

Did you clean install windows into its own (different) partition?

What is the HD setup (take a screnshot of the virtual HD setup)

What is the exact error? What does it say in event viewer?
There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Let us know if you need help with any of this.

    Hi, thanks for the answer.

I'm sorry if I don't understand what you are asking, I'll try to be more clear. I have looked the event viewer and no event appears when I try to open a file. Here is what I did:

My HD has two partitions (C: and D:). I had Windows XP installed in my computer and I decided to install Windows 7. I have installed it in C: but all the files in D:, which I didn't format, can't be opened now. If I download, for example, an image from internet I can open it without problems. But all the files before the installation seem to be corrupted. That's why I think that somehow the installation has corrupted all the files.

    Thanks.

What is the Brand name of the computer? Was D:\ partition XP's recovery?

Did you overwrite XP on C with Win7? Did you do a partition-specific wipe or format first?
    What else is on D?

Please post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive map with listings, using Snipping Tool in Start menu.

Transfer some of these files which won't open to another computer to see if they will open there. You may need to take ownership of them: Take Ownership Shortcut
