W7 Will not remember folder positions and sizes

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit RC1

I'm working with Windows W7 in anticipation of upgrading my graphics / photography business from Vista.

W7 will not remember Windows Explorer folder positions and sizes.

This was an big issue for me in Vista, and I prayed that it would be fixed in W7 (while my group was praying I would change over to Apple). A number of other 'Vista problems' have been resolved, and was very happy with W7 until I hit this problem again.

This may seem minor to some, but I watch my staff repositioning and resizing windows on their dual display setups in Vista all day, and I'm not going to tolerate this from an OS again. It is the antithesis of 'productive', plus it's irritating and costly.

Does anyone at Microsoft care about this? Will there be a fix? I'm not hopeful since nothing was done about it in Vista, except some registry hacks that were not permanent solutions.

I just opened "My Computer"...resized it, moved it, and closed it. When I reopened it, it was the same size and position as it was when I closed it.

sup3rspt - Try opening several and resizing / positioning them, then closing them and reopening them. If that works, reboot and see what happens. I think you'll see my problem. There has been a lot written about this issue in Vista and Windows 7 - IM

LFB - Yup, that's similar to the registry hack I mentioned in my post. Stops working after time passes, in my experience. Thanks for the thought - IM

I see what you mean. All new Explorer windows open the same size and position as the last one that was closed.

If the registry hack stops working, maybe it got overwritten. Try change the permissions to read-only.

Thanks Y'all for your input. I found a third party software (WindowsManager) that does the trick for now. It's simple to use. When I get a day, I'm going to visit Redmond and have a chat with some friends - IM

I can confirm this DOES NOT WORK

The more I use W7 the more I am planning on staying with MAC and Hackintoshing more computers. They might have fixed some problems but they created many they did not need to create. The new Windows Explorer is HORRIBLE, did it need changing? NO NO NO

Microsoft really doesn't get it. They are like the Detroit automakers, heads in the sand believing they dominate the market so they don't have to make what the users want. But MAC will continue to gain market share until MS looses their dominance and then it will be too late.

This trick will reset the folder view settings and will completely disable the automatic folder type discovery feature, so you'll not face this problem any more. Windows will always use your custom view settings for all folders.:


So follow these simple steps to fix this problem:

1. Type regedit in RUN or start menu search box and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor.

2. Now navigate to following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell

3. Under "Shell" key, select "Bags" key and press "Delete" key. It'll ask for confirmation, click on Yes button.

4. Now right-click on "Shell" key and select "New -> Key" option. Give the new key name of Bags

5. Now right-click on "Bags" key and select "New -> Key" option. Give the new key name of AllFolders

6. Again right-click on "AllFolders" key and select "New -> Key" option. Give the new key name of Shell

7. Now click on this new "Shell" key and in right-side pane, create a new String value and give it name of FolderType and set its value to NotSpecified
