Unfortunately now our systems are becoming overly bloated with software that runs hundreds or thousands of times slower than it would if it was written in languages such as assembler.
To be fair, if we were still writing in asm, most of our software would not exist. Beefy hardware allows software engineers to worry less about registers and instruction sets and more about user experience. If programming wasn't as easy and accessible as it is today, complex software would take decades to write. Even webpages from 1995 were ridiculously simple compared to what is permitted with our beastly machines.

That's certainly a valid point. I guess one could still dream that Windows was written entirely in assembler

Well progamming is not simple now either. Biggest problem we have facing right now is that we have all these cores and so much cpu horsepower and how to take advantage of all that. Multithreaded programming is a huge hot topic right now.

Maybe 'easier' is a poor choice of words. I meant programming is now higher level. You can teach an eight year old how to write simple GUI applications in a number of languages. If programmers spent all their time worrying about low level bit shuffling, nothing would ever get done on today's scale.

Of course, asm is still used in encryption algorithms, compression routines, embedded systems, etc. But you could never write something like Firefox or Word in it. It's a nice skill to have, but asm is pretty much dead for other modern software. It simply can't scale to large software development.

Fortunately Firefox is not written in .NET... because .NET programs aren't even machine code (however they are easy to write).

Anyhow, sorry that we got so far off topic.

I love it! Somethings that really makes me happy is that the drivers for my wireless adapter were already built into the OS so Windows loaded up with the internet right away! It also feels much more responsive and stable than all previous builds. All I have to say is well done Microsoft!
