I just created a basic task 5 minutes ahead to display "hello bill" and the message displayed. So tell us the details- what are the trigger, action etc. you chose.
i'll have to create another to tell you because I can't delete any task i've made or look at it's properties. I've done both but now I can't find either of those fuctions! trust me, I know I sound like an idiot but i'm not. I may not be Einstein but this is just a real PITA. Not user friendly at all.

If you're having wierd problems, try a couple of things. One, download and run a scan with the freeware version of Malwarebytes antimalware. Two, run sfc scan a few times to fix corrupted system files.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Ok, just created the same task and when the properties opened after i finished i left everything default. So look at theat if you create a task and you'll see theres nothing there to cause an issue. anyways, used the same settings as in my last post only this time no error message. 4 minutes and waiting, i'll post back then with results

Oh, and checked it's dependancies in services and there are 2, both running

Of the many, many, triggers in task scheduler, you must have one checked/unchecked that's preventing a task from running. Go ever every trigger and make sure they're set where they need to be.

i have gone over every single setting ad nausium. I suppose it's possible, but +10.....naaa, it's possible at this point but highly unlikely as much as i've gone over this. I could nearly cite every word in the dialog boxes by heart if that tells you anything.

It worked ! No idea why, as i didn't do anything different, but it worked. However, now i fear important things will not work dependably.

I would have put a +1 but three characters are the least required for a reply to a post

In Task Scheduler do you have "All Task History" enabled?

If not you could enable it and look at what it says after the scheduled task tries to run.

Of course they will, stop being paranoid. Remember to do weekly maintenance on your machine- clean up temp files (I use CCleaner), run AV plus MBAM, defrag. Run sfc scan, that'll fix any system corruption.

What is the difference in terms of functionality between sfc scan and running the check disk utility in Properties--Tools--Error Checking with both Check Disk Options checked?:)

    Task Scheduler doesn't work

I have never been able to create a task (open a file) via the Task Scheduler since I have installed Windows 7.

I see that pre-installed tasks have a “location” noted and mine don’t. Is that relevant?

What location does this reference and how do I enter one?
