    dazco, not so fast, please.

If you are going to do a re-install of Win 7 (it seems advisable at this point considering your last post) please follow this: How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7 .

Then read up a little more on compatibility mode. Win 7 is way better than XP. Really.

No offense intended, dazco. It's just that when you mentioned the game name, Mike recognized that we may have been 'chasing the wrong rabbit'. Maybe you've found and tried this, but:

    Gears of War

Post #3 may be of particular interest.

by the way, i have googled the he** out of this, so thats not going to get anywhere. i've tried a LOT of phrases during hours worth of searching and no answers that worked. I didn't just decided to ask here w/o trying the obvious first.
I'm sorry, dazco, I didn't mean to imply you had not done so. The revelation regarding your real issue as related a specific game was a new one. Again, I meant no offense, dazco.

If your efforts to fix the initial issue caused further problems, a fresh install is probably warranted.

I would have to say that from what I've read after Googling, running GOW on Win 7 is going to be a futile effort, and it certainly will not be a good experience in a virtual machine.

Thanks, but i MUST reinstall now because i have screwed this install up trying to get this working. It worked at first, albeit with logon issues which cause me to not be able to save my keybind upon closing the game. Not a problem i could deal with, but the alternative turned out to be worse. Now i'm having problems installing anything. Tried to install MW2 and also windows live and they aren't allowed to install because of permissions. So i will look at mike's clean install link and do this again, and this time i will make an image on my storage drive after i've got it all configured with all the apps installed that i never had any issues with. Thanks.

+1 on the system drive imaging. I can't think of anything that is more 'bacon-saving' than having an image of a fresh, problem free install that can be quickly and easily restored. Once you have it, you can try to get 'Gears' working by the various methods found. What doesn't work can be written over with your image.

That said, I think the XP mode 'quest' can be shelved. Good luck. Let us know how it goes, or if you have further questions.
