HP Appear To Have Lost My Laptop. What Should I Do Now?

Basically a courier came to pick up my laptop so i gave it to him. I was told by an HP technician a few weeks beforehand to only give the courier the laptop without the battery in it. I recieved an email from HP this morning saying "Your unit is being collected tomorrow Fri 7 Jan as an empty box was received by the repair centre." I've replied to the email saying i didn't even put my laptop in a box and asked them if they have indeed lost it, but i've not recieved a reply yet. I'd like to know what my options are if they have. Will they supply me with replacement of the same model? I'm still within warranty, but i don't know if that makes a difference.

What service was used to pick up the laptop? I used to work for HP, and also dealt with them after leaving the company, and never had a courier pick anything up. Do you have any proof that a service did get your laptop?

It was DPD UK who collected it. The guy was delivering a tshirt i had ordered and when he noticed the address he asked if it was me that was waiting for my laptop to be collected. He said he could just take it for me there and then so i wasn't going to say no, i'd been waiting for about 2 weeks because they'd failed to collect it many times before. The only proof i'd have of it being picked up would be the email i sent to HP on the same day asking them to cancel the collection i had arranged for the next day because it had been collected already.

Please notice this kind of thing has never happened to me, so this is just my opinion, things I would do.

You need to prove the courier got your computer. As always I would like to assume people are honest, the courier in question, too, so I would first try to contact him. Try to remember the exact date and time when the courier picked up your laptop. Then call the courier company to ask them to tell the courier to contact you, leaving them your phone number and email address (I doubt they'll find him to receive your call).

The courier should remember you and receiving the laptop if, as you told, you did not even pack it. In this case I do not believe HP is going to compensate you, instead I believe you would be compensated from the insurance of the courier company.

If the courier says he can not remember, or if you can not in some other way prove the laptop is already picked up, the worst case scenario is you have to report this to the police as theft. Then it is your word against the courier's / courier company's word. In this case I think you'd better to buy a new laptop.

    Very sorry for you,

I'm guessing that the courier didn't give you a receipt? If not, any information you can remember regarding the courier, like his name, appearance, car he drove, anything? If so, you should make a list of those now.

Edit: I see that DPD is a delivery service, so you might start with them. They should have a record of the delivery and who the employee was.

Your 'investigation' should start there. If the courier denies picking it up, file a formal complaint with the delivery service, a police report and contact HP. This is assuming the worst, of course (that the 'delivery guy' stole your laptop), which may not be the case.

Edit: I guess it should be said that you should always get a signed receipt when handing over expensive equipment.

    Hi,

Just in case you are still watching this thread, was there any solution to this? it looks like a similar thing has just happened to me but with Samsung instead of HP. Im still waiting on a colleague to get back from holiday to find out he got proof of pickup, but im guessing probably not.

Any info/advice you might have would be amazing!

Yes this was resolved ages ago. The courier showed up at my door saying he found it in the back of his van, so it was no fault of HP, just an idiot.

I'd still be relieved that it wasn't lost and the courier stepped up with it.
