    Shortcut Bars?

In XP it was dead easy, and really convenient to create single click shortcuts on a menu bar. These bars could then be dragged to any side of the screen.

Is there any way of doing something similar in Windows7?

    Thanks

Have you tried right-clicking on an unused part of the Taskbar, click "Toolbars", click "New Toolbar"?

That just clutters an already cluttered area. I'm looking to create side or top bar menus as before.

I use RocketDock to do what you want. Its free and it works quite well with Windows 7.

Right click > Pin this program to taskbar? Then to move the taskbar, Right Click > Properties?
