W7 problem with missing icons on desktop....

I am running a laptop with W7, which I got about 9 months ago. Originally when I booted/rebooted a number of icons/shortcuts appeared across the top part of the desktop. These included icons for Internet Explorer, Movies, Games etc . Mysteriously they no longer appear.
Does anyone know what this toolbar is called? I use the word Toolbar loosely, as I’m not sure if this is what it is known as and I don’t want people to think I mean something different as it’s nothing to do with the system tray or the taskbar. I would like to search Goggle myself for a solution to this mystery, but I can’t find the correct name to investigate it.
Has anyone had a similar experience or know of a solution to make these icons reappear for me?

You might have had what is called the "Dell Dock" take a look here and see if it looks like what you're trying to explain: The Dell Dock, by Stardock : Powered by ObjectDock

Right click on your desktop and got to "View" and see if "Show desktop icons" is checked. Also right click on your desktop and select Personalize. Then click "Change desktop icons" in the upper left. Now look to see if the icons in question are checked.

Sorry for the delay in getting back and thank you for both replies.

It was, in fact, the Stardock mentioned by "ie9" that I was referring to, something I'd never heard of before. I haven't a clue how I made it disappear, but I've re-downloaded now from the link provided and I'm back to normal again.

So thank you again for the solution.....absolute fanastic Board, as usual!!
