When my pc trys to reboot it tries to install a windows update but it sits and you think its installing but its not. If the pc need to reboot it fails at the bios screen and you have to power off. Then you get a windows saying that windows could not restart and to press F1 to continue but the reason for the reboot has not been done.
It would be helpful to know where in the startup process the system freezes.
When the computer is first turned on it first runs a BIOS Boot routine (white letters on a black background, although some laptops hide this activity), then Windows starts up with a "Starting Windows" message, then coalescing squares on a black background, then a blue splash screen, then the desktop.
Where in this progression does the startup stop?
its the first screen with bis maker, the one you would press escape to go into the bios(by the way I have tried that with no responce). Only a full power down can you get a boot.
OK. A real no boot.
You should try a "Clear CMOS" (or "CLRTC" on an Asus board).
CLRTC Procedure
- Note all your current BIOS settings
- Shut down the computer > remove the power cord.
- Remove the 3v battery.
- Move the CLRTC jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3.
- Touch a metal part of the case and Press and Hold the reset button for approx. 30 seconds to discharge all power from the board.
- Put the CLRTC jumper back on 1-2.
- Replace the battery > replace the power cord > boot.
- Immediately go back into BIOS and reset all your preferred settings. If the CLRTC worked you will need to reset the date and time.
Obviously you will not be able to do step one. You will need to remember whether the SATA controller is currently in IDE or AHCI mode and make that change, if necessary, after performing the CLRTC.

What you are going to want to do when you get the computer to boot and start windows is press F8 during the BIOS boot to get to the windows boot menu and choose "Restore Last Known Good Configuration" to get past the failed update that may be causing the problem.
Can you do this now (before trying CLRTC)?
If Last Known Good Config doesn't work, try System Restoring to before the Update in question: System Restore
You may need to run the Restore from the DVD Repair console or Repair CD.
Once restored to before the install loop begins, determine the problem update (if you don't know it) by installing Updates one at a time with Restore points until you find the problem repeating, then SysRestore again, copy down details of problem update. Open a Support case on Windows Update website and in the Updates forum here to get it resolved.

I'm now curious on how a Windows Update could corrupt the BIOS at the CMOS level. I know that can happen with a "hard shutdown" (pulling the power cord on a running PC). But I don't know if an OS restart could simulate that condition.
