You could start by running the Disk Check utility on the drive:

Start > Computer > select (highlight) the drive > right click & Properties > Tools Tab > Error Checking > Check Now > Check "Automattically Fix File System Errors" > Start.

You could also check "Scan and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors", but this will take much longer, especially on an external drive.

Most times I run the standard scan and then if it finds errors I run it with all options checked. But in your case you might just "cut to the chase" as they say.

Had this problem reinstalling Windows 7 Home Premium on an old HP Small Form Factor Business machine. I fixed it by going into the bios > STORAGE> STORAGE OPTIONS> and switch the SATA Emulation from LEGACY(IDE) to NATIVE(AHCI). Good luck!
