Windows 7: "Item Not Found ... Verify location and try again."

"Item Not Found ... Verify location and try again."

Win7-64 Home Premium OEM on a little desktop system at my home.

When I rename file XXX, I get the message:

Item Not Found. XXX is no longer located in c:\...
Verify location and try again. Date created: xx-xx-xxxx

When I click "Try Again" the rename looks complete. But it causes numerous other problems.

I checked attributes on the folder, did a "take ownership", etc. UAC has been turned off for months.

This is evidently a known problem, possibly connected to KB980408. I haven't been able to positively track it down, focus on the exact problem and solution. I need to fix it ASAP.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. Someone has nailed it down?

Thx,
P

This is a problem caused by the deletion or moving of a file. It can be caused by clicking its shortcut to a previous location and it not actually be there anymore. Can you create a new file without moving it, and still be able to access it?

Basically, you cannot rename a file that the system cannot find, and it could be for numerous reasons that it cannot find it. What file are you renaming, a document?

It is not the common problem that you describe.

The problem is similar or identical to what they are trying to track down at:

Then I recommend following their solution (Restore, don't install that update, set updates to manual). Look into uninstalling that update, though I'm not sure if you can, you may just be stuck with doing a restore. See if that fixes your problem, and wait for microsoft to give a fix.

I have nothing to restore from previous to the problem, can't find the update, don't trust what Win7 reports for update history.

Waiting for microsoft is like waiting to die.

You know not of the problem. Perhaps someone else does know?

"Item Not Found" when Moving or Renaming
Every time I move or rename a folder, an "Item Not Found" dialog opens. It says "Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C:\...". When I click "Try Again", it moves/renames just fine. Does anyone know why it's happening and how I can make it stop? It's incredibly annoying.

"Item not found" bug when moving or renaming files/folders
Hello, I just made an account here because this bug is seriously bugging me. It shows up whenever I move or create any new files/folders. I have googled the registry fix and that doesn't seem to be working. Is there any other known fix? P.S. There is nothing wrong with Waterfox.

"Item Not Found" is driving me nuts
Hi all! For some unknown reason, my 64-bit 7 gives "Item Not Found" dialog whenever I try to move/delete a folder or an archive. All I have to do is to click "Try Again" for the command to go through, but it's driving me insane. What's wrong with my 7? Sample dialog box in an attachment.
