What shall we do with Vista?

I've had a dual boot vista/xp system for a couple of years but hardly ever booted into vista. Why would I? it runs about half the speed of xp. Now I'm dual booting xp/win 7 and I don't boot into xp very much. Mainly to record TV because my tv card doesn't work too well in vista or 7. Vista can sink into the deepest ditch and good riddens!

The mistake MS made with Vista was they built it expecting a certain level of competence from both machine and user.

When it hit the market - those levels weren't there.

We all know it ended up on machines it wasn't built for and your average punter knows nothing about computing - and doesn't want to know.

If used on and by who it was built for, Vista is superb.

On my system , there is no noticeable improvement in speed or performance in 7 - in fact Vista boots faster - a few seconds, maybe- but that's a lot in percentage terms.

I am definitely keeping Vista - it is truly excellent.

Vista came on my laptop, so I have a OEM license. The only thing I really liked about Vista was the power options. I still preferred XP for raw speed. Now I have XP SP3 and Win7 RC on my laptop. Will probably never use Vista again.

Vista RTM was horrible, even on a powerful machine. MS really screwed up by rushing it out the door when it wasn't ready for prime time. Vista SP1 on the other hand, was pretty good. I used it on my old trusty nForce2 rig for a year.

I have since replaced Vista SP1 with Win7 -- wow, what a difference, or should I say, what an improvement Win7 is over Vista... Like most of you, I'm anxiously waiting for RTM. But regardless of my positive experiences with Win7, I still liked Vista SP1 nevertheless. As a matter of fact, I just got rid of Win7 (build 7127) and installed Vista SP2 a couple days ago. Things are running smoothly for the most part... Windows Explorer seems to be a little more responsive than SP1 with no slow file copy issues to speak of -- well not yet at least, keeping my fingers crossed. Contrary to popular belief, SP1 did not resolve slow file transfers.

Perhaps the biggest improvement I've seen with Vista SP2 (so far) is the networking. My broadband speeds are back to normal WinXP speeds, using Vista default settings (no tweaking). Whereas in SP1, Receive Window Auto-Tuning caused all sorts of problems. With it enabled, browsing and downloads came to a crawl, barely reaching 60KB/s on a 2Mbit connection. I had no choice but to disable it to bring things back up to par. This is no longer the case with SP2 however.

Note: It seems the tcp auto-tuning feature in Win7 7127 is also "broken" like it was in Vista SP1. I have to disable it to get my connection running normally... Anybody else experienced this? Will be installing 7229 later today.

Good to hear you made good use of Vista. I'm going to keep Vista cause to me, it has been a really superb OS. Of course some people will beg to differ but it's probably cause of poor hardware. Even though I feel 7 has much more improvements on Stability Security and Speed, I still feel more at home with Vista. But I'm upgrading to 7 anyways. :) Huge Upgrade Loving Fan.
