Only the Statistics display works properly.

It's not a critical problem (I thought that I might try to fix the Windows calculator).

I have a replacement calculator (Moffsoft FreeCalc).
In some ways it seems better than the standard Windows calculator.
Hmm, odd. As a test, download and merge the .reg files in step 2 Option Two and step 3 Option Three in the tutorial below, then restart the computer to see if that may help.

Thanks Brink.
I'm currently battling with several different tasks:
  • Copying >400 GB of files to external HDDs
  • Battling with a weird network problem, so I'll be busy for a few hours.
Once I get this chaos under control, I'll try your suggestion.

I need to resize some partitions (hence the copying) so I was thinking about reinstalling my operating systems.

Oh my. Sounds like fun. I hope that's not a USB 2.0 external HDD. May take a while.

I'm afraid so.
I opted to copy most of the files to my friend's PC via the network.

What will be more fun is trying to get AHCI to work with XP.
When we tried to install XP on my friend's new laptop (he needed it for a program at his work) we spent a week trying different solutions and none of them worked.

Fixed by OS reinstall

I reinstalled my operating systems over the past few days (a 3 or 4 hour job, which took an entire day, due to weird SNAFUs).

Slipstreaming the AHCI drivers into XP worked 1st time.
My friend and I weren't able to get that to work with his new laptop (despite spending multiple days trying multiple suggestions).

Unfortunately I wasn't able to sliipstream any updates (apart from SPs) into my XP install disc.
The W7 slipstreamed disc totally "spat the dummy", so I had to perform each step separately.

I didn't get to try out your most recent suggestion.

The calculator problem is fixed now though.

SysWOW64 calc.exe

Re: Lehnerus2000 post

After reinstalling Win 7 64, my calculator looked similar to your 07 Sep 2012 screen shot:

In addition to the illegible result, it also had background bleed-thru in the display field and between the keys. Basic or Aero theme doesn't make a difference.

This has been reported by others, who usually just give up and install a replacement calculator.

I finally fixed the problem by running:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\calc.exe
version 6.1.7601.17514,

instead of:

C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe
version 6.1.7600.16385.
