In addition to the illegible result, it also had background bleed-thru in the display field and between the keys. Basic or Aero theme doesn't make a difference.

This has been reported by others, who usually just give up and install a replacement calculator.

I finally fixed the problem by running:
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\calc.exe version 6.1.7601.17514,

instead of:
C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe version 6.1.7600.16385.

I had a couple of other mysterious problems occur, so I reinstalled all of my operating systems about a week after that post (12 September 2012).
That (obviously) fixed my problem(s).
