Make sure that UAC is set to notify. If you are not notified that is the hidden adm.
Also, you can try to enable the hidden adm and see what happens.
User Account Control - UAC - Change Notification Settings
I am notified by UAC, and some of the setting/menu buttons (like the ones in Windows Update or in System etc.) have got the UAC shield against them :-) Thanks again for your time and help - it's confusing when there are several methods to do the same thing :-)

If you are notified by UAC, you have a regular administrator account.
Just take your time, ask and learn. You will be ok in a short time.

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable
Create a new administrator account and hide the above administrator like it should be.
The hidden account is to be used only in the case of problems that the normal adminstrator cannot solve. It is too powerful for the inexperienced to use on a daily basis. It can make changes to your computer that can cause problems.
Many times stores that sell computers use the Hidden Administrator with their name.
Hi, I have a normal administrator account which gives me UAC prompts/notifications when I need to change the settings or install/uninstall software.

I was wondering if the following possibility would also work since my computer is new (I have hardly used it) and I have only installed a few programs (including, of course, security software - Norton Internet Security 2011) on it and added two or three Word documents. I've not transferred any music, videos, pictures etc. to the computer so far. In other words - I don't have many files to copy, and I could simply move my documents and copies of my Firefox and Thunderbird profile folders to a USB flash drive and then transfer them in that manner to a new user account. Would that be possible (that way I would not have to create a third temporary administrator account either)?
If this is the case, I don't understand why you haven't already done it. You could have already been back up and running instead of dragging this thread on for days. If we had been given that kind of information in your initial question, the advice given to you would have probably been to do just that.

I wasn't sure which set of instructions to follow, and I only got to understand when to use which instructions when I posted here and got some good and patient answers, especially from richc46. And I did mention in my opening post that my computer was new.

You are being rather rude, you know. Not everyone can be a computer genius. I thought that that's what this forum was for - to be helped (politely) by computer-savvy people.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for posting back only now - I had to buy a Windows 7-compatible NTFS-formatted external hard drive since I wanted to back up stuff and create a system image before doing some major fiddling-around with my new computer ;-) I renamed my user account back to its previous name and created a new admin one under my own name. I transferred the contents of my Firefox and Thunderbird programs to their new profile folders (note: run Thunderbird and Firefox once to create said profile folders) and copied my handful of documents - nothing else. I had to re-create a few things, like some shortcuts and a few basic settings (which I had expected).

I will keep both accounts for a month or so, and then delete the old one. Thank you very much for your time and help, and kudos to especially you, richc46, for explaining things patiently to a non-techie :-)
