Why double login needed coming out of sleep mode?

Weird quirk that for a long time I thought was my imagination, but it's not:

When my PC goes into sleep mode (typically while not logged in), I am asked for my password, I enter it, I briefly get the bright blue screen saying Welcome - and then boom, back to the login screen and I have to enter my password again.

And I don't think it's a matter of first login wakes me from sleep; second gets me to my desktop. I've started just pressing enter on the password screen the first time, which of course tells me that there's a password error. Then I'll enter my password and I'm in - after just one successful password entry.

If it's some kind of bios-specific thing, my MB is a Gigabyte, with the specifics shown in my HW profile.

Why is Windows 7 asking me to enter my password twice to get to my desktop from sleep mode?

Enter Control Panel>Power Options, on the right side select Require Password on Wake, turn it off. See if this is satisfactory.

Have not done that yet, but I think you're right. Machine went to sleep during the Super Bowl (probably during the first half) while I was logged in, and I only needed one PW to get in.

Guessing that the double login is one password to wake, one password for normal login.
