UAC is one more line of defense against hackers and malicious software. With all the recent talk about Java exploits, problems involving Adobe and Foxit Readers, etc I'm not at all upset about having to click on a "yes" button that UAC might throw at me. I'd rather "waste" a few seconds every hour to click the UAC prompt than to spend a whole lot more time reinstalling everything because some malware got through. But to each his own.

I read through most of the messages in this thread as I was getting the same problem every time I opened a WMF with advdraw in XP SP3 compatibility mode. If I ran it in Windows 7 mode it kept referring me to "regedit", which ever way it gave me a popup every time I opened a file. In the end I renamed "advdraw" to 'advdraw 2' and the problem is now resolved. I have no idea why but you might like to try renaming the problem program.
I haven't read through this whole thread, but the simple solution that worked for me is to go to msconfig, startup, and disable all. Note that those are just start-up programs and not necessary for the most part. If you really want something to turn on at start up then uncheck it. Restart your computer and it's gone. At least for me.
