Can you try the external HD on another computer ? Maybe a friends computer ?
As Doc suggests, checking the drive on another system is a good idea.
It may also be, since your disk space is unchanged, that there is a disk error at play:
Disk Check
Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log

guys i checked the driver in another system on a friends pc and again the same thing the folder appears like empty
do u think i can run an error scan for my drive and see if there is a problem there?
YES,
Than Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.
Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.
HD Diagnostic
what can i do with this? i dont know how to use it my friend
Have look at this post:
Cloning Laptop HDD
If you have your external HDD connected via USB then probably you won't be able check SMART in this software but in the "Error Scan" tab in HD Tune you will be able to check all disk sectors (remember to uncheck Quick Scan box) if there are any damaged/bad sectors on your drive.

Try using Recuva to see if it can reconstruct the deleted files: Recuva - Features
