Yes you can do it and here's how: You use your W7 upgrade disk to install W7 on a bare drive w. no previous OS without entering your upgrade key. If you did enter the key at this time, it would not allow you to proceed because there is no qualifying OS on the drive. After the install is finished, you have an unactivated 30 day trial of whatever version of W7 you installed. You boot into that trial version of W7 and insert your upgrade media and do an upgrade install from within W7, this time entering your upgrade key, which will be accepted because you are allowed to upgrade from W7 RTM, and when that is finished installing, you will have a fully activated installation of whatever version of W7 you bought an upgrade key for. Pretty cool no?
I grabbed Home Premium Upgrade from Amazon.ca. I would have gone Pro, but my vista copy was Home Premium

I chose Premium thinking I didn't need the Pro features for home use. That was until I realise I can't access my Samba shares. Grrrrr.
This is probably a really dumb question but... if one were able to get Professional for the exact same price as Home Premium, would there be any reason to choose Home Premium?
I ask this because under the UK student offer, the two are the same price, £30. On that basis I was going to go for Professional.
I wasn't sure, whether to get home premium or professional, but with some older (and still needed) programs and hardware I decided for professional (with XP mode).
I got the x64 pro on monday, installed on tuesday (that was the best win install I've ever seen!), and am now still adding my older programs. So far not too many problems (some crashes, which I never had on Vista x64), but I'm still not at the end of the line (of installing older programs). See what happens, I'm sure that old MS is gonna have some hidden surprises way deep down in the system!
By the way, so far I like Vista x64 (on my laptop) better ...
