I pre-ordered the Home Premium Upgrade today. When I go to install it, I'm hoping that 7 will prompt me to insert my XP CD, which will, in fact, be an OEM CD. I may or may not have XP installed on my HDD at this time.
I'm hoping that is how the upgrade will work. In the past (long ago), I remember it working that way. I can't see M$ expecting you to have a working and installed version of XP. Hell, what if your hard drive died on Oct. 21st?...one day before you receive your 7 Upgrade?
I also can't see M$ expecting you to have a full retail XP CD. I just read that 95% of Windows sales are OEM (packaged with a new PC).
UPDATE: According to this informative article (http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/new...than-vista.ars), you'll need to have XP installed and then the 7 Upgrade install will zap the XP install and write 7 over it (on the same partition). If such is the case, I doubt M$ will be too concerned about questionable copies of the OS. If they had you insert your XP CD, then I could see them being a bit more thorough about that.
I also found out that my pricing was wrong. I thought Full 7 Pro costs $199, it really costs $299!!! I went ahead and ordered an upgrade version of Pro for my business for $99.

didnt read thru all pages so i might have missed something but:
If I buy a new pc, with no OS and a "upgrade" version of w7 because its cheaper than full... Can I install the upgrade (will it even allow me to do that on a empty HD?) without entering the Product Key?... After the setup is complete I install it again and enter the Key and now i have a full 100% legit install of w7?
If this works, why is there even a full version to buy? Other than that you only have to install it once?
doesnt need to be installed, you just need a CD... i think ...theoretically... a copy would work too.... ... it asks you to pop it in if your doing a clean install. it reads it, makes sure it is a prior copy of windows than continues with the install. No difference really, except ... putting in a CD and taking it out.....
Just some info, I had vista home premium installed and then put in win7 rc. Since then I rebuilt my computer (motherboard, processor, etc) and installed the win7 rc disk I originally downloaded with the first Computer. Then on the 22nd I down loaded the preorder upgrade iso and installed it over the rc with the new key provided and it works just fine.
