Windows 7: Sleep Mode, Screensaver, Power Options not working

Sleep Mode, Screensaver, Power Options not working

I've had my ASUS for only a few months and it works like a charm, but I noticed a few days ago that it's not going into sleep mode anymore. The only changes I've made were:
1. Installed nod32 (antivirus)
2. Changed my desktop wallpaper
3. Installed the Adobe update

That's it. I didn't change anything else, but now my screen will stay lit up all night if I don't turn it off.

I tried turning the screensaver on, and it works in Preview, but never turns on on its own. I tried changing my wallpaper back. I changed the timing on the power settings. I've turned it off several times. I tried unplugging it and letting it run on battery. I'm using the Balanced power management option. I tried changing the power management option. Nothing works for me.

I've read that other people have similar problems. Sometimes it's a program running in the background that Windows sees as user activity... one guy said he uninstalled Norton and reinstalled and that fixed his problem. Sometimes it's an optical mouse, some random device plugged into a USB slot, or weird settings. There are a lot of people complaining about it, and now I join their ranks. I have no idea what to do.

Asus customizes Power Options with many reports of dysfunction - another example of how useless factory utilties have much better versions built into Win7.

Enter Control Panel>Power Options and choose a Balanced Plan unless you're a gamer, use High Performance. Then set your Sleep options.

Screensavers are outmoded with LCD monitors and can hang sleep. I would turn it off and use Win7 backgrounds slideshow. You can download 120 spectacular Win7 national edition screensavers:

If Sleep still hangs check your logs here especially the Performance log which logs these types of hangs with the cause often nearby.

You can also bring up a list of apps blocking sleep:

If all else fails, use the tracing tool which the Pro's use: Trace Windows 7 boot/shutdown/hibernate/standby/resume issues - MSFN

Windows 7 64bit

Thanks for trying, but I've been using the Windows 7 power options.

I ran a powercfg command to see if anything was preventing sleep, and it came back empty.

So I went to the Intel site and checked my drivers. It made some comment about my Intel HD Graphics driver being customized for my computer, so the site recommended that I find the newest driver from ASUS. I downloaded the latest graphics driver for my computer model (after a simple google search) and after a restart, my computer power options work perfectly.

In retrospect, if this helps anyone else, my Windows 7 Aero had stopped working a little while ago and and my screen's resolution changed suddenly. I thought I had fixed the resolution, and I thought maybe Aero (thumbnail previews of stacked windows) was changed or canceled in the newest windows update, so I didn't think much about it... but now I know that it was a problem with my graphics driver... the same cause of my computer staying awake.

Nice work figuring it out.

When you enable hardware driver auto-updating, the latest drivers should be delivered via optional Windows Updates: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

Lock PC by Power Options not screensaver
Hello, I am unable to lock my PC via power options. Although I have set it as to lock PC, it is impossible to do it as per Windows XP. The only way to lock it is through the screensaver, but this is not an option for me as I work 10 hours at an office and I prefer the blank screensaver to...
My screensaver and my power options are constantly chan
I set my screensaver to "Photos" but it is automatically being reset to "None". The same with my Power options. I set the monitor to never shut down. But then it is being reset to 20 minutes. My suspicion is that this happens when I change the Desktop background - but not always. Any ideas?
