Partitioning challenge

You asked why not shrink and get after it so to speak?
On the one hand I have the group you side with and the cautious ones who
advise to not partition, but load my Linux distros on another HD. The problem with USB or external OS is wireless aspect at least my experience thus far. I loaded Mint on a huge external got the multiple boot and am wireless in windows and still trying to get on line with Linux application. I just did this as a test. I may bite the bullet yet. I have recovery disks and yep I know how to hold down zero key and press power key once
and Toshiba returns me to out of the box defaults. Guess I should attempt partition to be able to talk intelligently about recovery disks

Be aware that GRUB bootloader can corrupt Win7 beyond Repair and might also mess with your Recovery Partition, forcing you to rely on Recovery Disks alone.

For this reason, I would use a second HD for the Linux distros.

I would also store externally a Win7 backup image.

Partition challenge RESOLVED

I appreciate the learning curve and while I am having challenges with win 7 I thought back to my first ISP access 3.1 and 6 floppies. Each upgrade was a learning curve and of them all XP was my favorite because it was my intro to Linux period, gparted and partitioning was a breeze. I installed mint on USB external yesterday, got a clean dual boot, but no Internet access. Probably because I am wireless. But again thanks.
