are you talking about the dotted line?

i've never heard anyone call the default windows wallpaper 'cool' - but each to their own...

First question, is that selection box there no matter what background you select?

    Change your Desktop wallpaper.

Right click on the Desktop and select Personalize.
Pick one of the existing themes.
Click on Desktop Background then setup the slide show the way you want it to work.
If you want a single background to stay, select just that one.

Click Start, and in the Search box, search "Color" and click "Change window color and metrics"

Scroll down to "Hyperlink" in the item drop-down box. That color should determine your dragbox color, as well as your hyperlinks.

I guess fair blue on a fair blue background does not work too well. Change the background and see.

Try this: Start > Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools

Click "Adjust Visual Effects" in the left pane.

Under the Visual Effects tab, in the list at the bottom, there should be a checkbox for "Show translucent selection rectangle"
