For everyone concerned about buying the upgrade disk

The Dell installation discs that I have come across are in fact install discs - not a manufacturer image.

In that case, it will work fine.

Not sure if you can download to India from the US site - I suspect not.

But I still don't understand how this upgrade validation thing works exactly. If, as was said earlier in this thread, it is the Vista installation media (and not the user's Vista key) that is used to validate the right to upgrade, it would seem that any Vista install disk should be sufficient to validate an upgrade to any version of W7 provided one has purchased the appropriate W7 upgrade key for the version they want to install.

So if that is correct, all one would have to do is insert an easily obtained Vista install disk when prompted and you are good to proceed to install any version of W7 you have purchased.

And if that doesn't work, there is always the double W7 (first w/o key and then upgrade from within W7 w. key) install route.

So I'm pretty happy to be able to get a version of W7 that will satisfy my needs for only ~$50.

I don't fully understand it either, I'm just going by the upgrade path provided by microsoft and what was explained to me on the phone. But yeah, if all else fails, then the double install would certainly work.

I believe MS are really interested in generating the idea 7 has had a record pre sales run - Bestseller at Amazon, etc.

That may filter into the consciousness of businesses.

It will also influence the journalists who are getting the press releases.

You can get the upgade in a box if you like. It is $14.99 extra plus shipping.

The difference is between the Upgrade License and the Full Retail License.
