How can I arrange files within folders by content, not numbers

How can I arrange jpgs within a folder without renaming them FIRST? XP allowed drag and drop to allow MY OWN organization. Windows 7 seems to have replaced that with only auto-arrange options. Am I missing something or is there still some way to organize a slideshow or content-based order?
Still hopeful of the common sense tool from XP.

    It worked!

    Hello ignatzatsonic,
OMG! It worked. I have been pursuing this for weeks on countless forums and had given up hope. I am now brought back into the fold. Thank you.
I should perhaps start a new thread...but if you're willing to answer here I do have another question. One shared by many, apparently.
My windows 7 desktop folders all have their contents peeking out from within. Though I would prefer the flat and closed folders available in XP I could live with the "improvements" if I could just keep the clutter of the contents from spilling out of the folders. Mye DESKTOP folders have resisted every effort to prevent them from showing their contents. Is it possible to CLOSE them, if not flatten them?
    Fingers crossed,
    M-

Hello Hartlyn, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm happy to hear that you got the first issue sorted. :)

You could turn off thumbnail previews to only have a blank folder, but it would also turn them off for files as well.

Another way to do this with thumbnail previews still turned on it to use the tutorial below to change the default folder icons to a icon of your choice instead. For example, the flat folder icon like in XP.

Folder Icon - Change Default Icon

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    flat/empty folders on desktop

    Shawn,
Stumbling through the obstacle course of ads masquerading as solutions I found your directions…But.
I do not have a “Resource Hacker”…let alone know what it is. Nor do I have a “System File Replacer”. Additionally, I have no idea what it is to “Take Ownership of the original “imageres.dll file” (and don’t really want to spend my life finding out).
I have no idea what these complex directions mean and suspect I will do more damage than good trying to follow blindly.
Is there not a simple and direct way to change the desktop folder icons to a simpler icon that does not spill its guts on my desktop?
    Still hopeful,
    M-

    I can understand that Hartlyn.

You could download and install a program like Windows 7 Manager and use it's 14 trial period to change the default folder icon. When you uninstall the program, the folder icons will still be changed.
