Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1

By telling you that the OS is designed to have background data traffic, and that it may be unavoidable until you get a higher bandwidth service. According to your specs, you aren't even running at 56K speeds.

Ummm... was that rudeness directed at me? I read it as Mitchell was responding to dahermit that dialup was the cause of his problem. I hope it wasn't directed at me.

Anyway, I do have broadband. I have ADSL1, and yes it is slow. Not as slow as dialup. I average 60KBps. But that's off topic.

Back on topic, do background transfers really affect the OS so dramatically? Certainly will affect any Internet based activity, but having been living on Cable Internet or the last 10 years, there was no impact to me when I was downloading.

If something is downloading though - there are usually some form of indicators. Such as a notification icon when it is downloading, or has finished downloading and will say "updates are ready to install" etc.

I agree with allend66. Install some firewall software.

Not at all I can assure you. That was a bit of a mixup on my part for which I apologise. I got the profiles of you and dahermit confused. It looked to me as if another member was criticising a student for not having broadband as I work with many students who are in that position. They can't always afford it.
Sorry again no offense meant.

Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit

This post pos way too late. Re lovely auto updates or, unrequested downloads, I've had 800 MB worth in the last 3 days - getting a bit sick of it to be honest. What can be used to see who's doing? it ie who is using the bandwidth up?

And stop it by opening Java application. It was really annoying. Thanks to the blog and the person who replied with it.
