The file is not another copy of the document you are saving. The folder is named differently depending on how you get there, either by going :

start > documents. (this is going through the libraries folder to get to your documents)

    or

start > *your username* > my documents. (this way goes through your user profile)

When you are saving a file to "Documents" or My "Documents" you are saving it to the same place.

I hope i'm making some form of sense

    Let me know.

I think what Clinkz is trying to say is that one of the "copies" of the document is the actual document, and the other "copy" is really, essentially, just a shortcut to the document.

Are you looking under Libraries or in C:\Users\<your user name>\Documents ?

The MyDocuments folder is known as a junction point. It is a special shortcut built in to the NTFS file system. It is used so that old programs which might have a hard coded path to Documents continue to work.

In the Libraries folders on the left-hand Explorer bar, the default folders included under Documents are My Documents and Public Documents, then any other folders (for example on another HD) which you rightclick>Add to Library.

In order to avoid confusion when dragging and dropping, I rightclick>Remove from Libraries all of the Public folders (Docs, Pics, etc) so that nothing is accidentally derailed into the Public folder.

However if you have a home network you may want public folders active so you can deliberately share something with other users on the network by placing those fiiles in the Public folder for that category, or not.

So if I want to point to a path, I use Documents/My Documents/such&such.docx.

Where is the real document - in Documents or My Documents?

I think I understand, just want to be able to point to the correct path.

    Thanks for your replies

    The real folder is Documents.
