How to get a hard drive out of freeze mode?

I am trying to erase all of the data on my hard disk using an OS based off of linux...And It says my hard drive is frozen. How do I unfreeze it? It is a 3 month old Western Digital Scorpio 500gb 5400 rpm 2.5" disk. Please help me!

If you have a single hard drive, I would recommend just using DBAN. I believe it'll ignore any and all parameters you've managed above.

    Hello.

Here is a better option using the Windows default diskpart, no 3rd party software needed, have a look at Step One of this tutorial at the link below and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

The advantage to using DBAN if you are only trying to clean up the drive to do a reinstall is you only need to run it for a minute or so, enough to wipe the beginning of the drive so the MBR (Master Boot Record) and Partition Table is wiped out. If you then look at that drive from a Windows Install CD/DVD, it will show as RAW and will require you to format it to install.

    Just my $.02 worth.

Running the clean command instead of the clean all does exactly the same thing; the only issue is the old data/code/drivers are all still there and not over-written at all; though a clean will leave the HDD as unallocated space and not Raw.

What are you doing when it says it's frozen? And what Linux OS are you using?

Use Western Digital Lifeguard from the Support Downloads webpage for your HD model.

First run the HD diagnostics/repair extended CD scan, then from the same disk Wipe the HD.
