I'm curious as to why two people voted 'no'.
I only voted no for one reason, and really, its not Win7's fault, but ATI. I have a ASUS W90VP with dual 4870's in crossfire and there are no video drivers that work for my setup, YET.

So, I guess its a conditional not yet.

I didn't vote because neither choice works for me.

As far as XP goes, no question, absolutely better. It is more secure, makes better use of modern hardware, and I think the GUI is vastly improved.

As far as Vista goes, meh. I believe 7 is an incremental improvement over Vista, but certainly not vastly better. On modern hardware, 7 is no faster than Vista SP2, and benchmark after benchmark shows this. What 7 does do better is run on lesser hardware, making it viable for netbooks.

I have 4 computers at home and I will only be upgrading one of them to 7. The others will remain Vista for the time being. I can't justify the cost to upgrade all of them, 7 just doesn't offer that much more.

Yes, but they are available as free downloads. I actually like this better, as this allows these components to be updated on a different schedule than the OS via SPs.

Second that. Live Mail is pretty nice already but if it is separated from the main update track that's a big plus.

Some of those drivers issues are not Windows7 fault, manufacturers are the ones that should release such drivers.. I had a couple of bsods but it was because I needed a newer nvidia driver..

You two agree on something?! I have got to post a crosslink to the "Is IE Dead?" thread....

Here is a kicker, I agree with both of you as well. The "add-ons' mentioned contributed to the "bloatware" accusations regarding non-essential software bundled with the OS (unlike IE, hehe...). So now people can elect to use the MS add-ons or not.

So yes, they were removed but they are available. Also I like the direction Windows Live is taking. It really is a move toward "cloud computing" in many ways. Live Mail is superior to both the old Hotmail and the Windows Mail, IMO. Photo Gallery and Move Maker, well, I think there are better 3rd party tools but, as pointed out, they can now be promoted and developed as independent entities.

Drivers always lag the betas and RCs. As long as the manufacturers hit the RTM date all will be well in the mass market release. Welcome to the bleeding edge of technology. In the last month or so, on my W7 7232 system alone, I have installed brand spanking new W7 compatible drivers from Realtek, ATI and Logitech before their hardware would work.

Actually, I respect pertrossa's point of view almost always. He obviously has been involved in the software world in his past and has dealt with things from a different standpoint than I. He has a Euro-centric body of experience and mine is US-centric, but I think we both feel the same regarding competition and monopolies.

We obviously disagree on a number of points regarding MS's role in things, but I think he makes very good points and causes me to at least pause and do some research.

I like to debate. It's fun to have an adversary who knows as much, if not more than I.

I use XP Pro at work all day doing 3D modeling and it works ok on the Dual XEON quad core...could be better.

My lappy has Vista Home and Vista Business and runs better than any PC I have ever had, even the work PC. My Win7 decided to take a crap.

I like 7 to a point but it is a matter of opinion. Win7 is pretty much "Vista Lite" in my opinion to me. I have gotten used to Vista over time. And using 7 takes a little getting used to.

So I would have to say Vista is #1 and XP and 7 are a close tie given that they run almost the same for me but not in comparison to the Vista.

FYI...I know that this is a Win7 forum, but I still like Vista more...for now...
