    search in folder

    Win 7 is good in many respects, but the search function is cumbersome. How do I, for instance, search for a file in a specific location (folder or memory stick)? "Search programs and files" just gives you everything there is on the computer for the search words. XP seems much better organized in this respect, or is there something I just have not figured out?

    You can use alternatives like "Search my Files" or "dNgrep" ( Very powerful!) Some features;

    Features
    • Shell integration (ability to search from explorer)
    • Plain text/regex/XPath search (including case-insensitive search)
    • Phonetic search (using Bitap and Needleman-Wunch algorithms)
    • File move/copy/delete actions
    • Search inside archives (via plug-in)
    • Search MS Word documents (via plug-in)
    • Search PDF documents (via plug-in)
    • Undo functionality
    • Optional integration with text editor (like notepad++)
    • Bookmarks (ability to save regex searches for the future)
    • Pattern test form
    • Search result highlighting
    • Does not require installation (can be run from USB drive)

    If you want to search all your files more or less instantaneously try "Everything";

    According ti IObit Security 360 the download you suggested contains the threat Agent.NCC. Might be a mistake, but I don't think I will take the risk.

    Well I wouldn't bother with IObit programs at all. They have a very poor reputation. If you are referring to the downloads I posted, they are all squeaky clean.

    No member of standing here will knowingly direct you to software containing threats.

    If you want to set up an automatic search on any directory you happen to be in, here is one way to do it;

    Classic Shell Add On Buttons

    I use Locate32, it's free. You can search in various locations. The program uses its own database. Much faster than Windows search. You can also use AutoHotKey, again free, to automate searches, and searches from data in a text file! I use this AutoHotKey scripts to search for missing cat, mum, packages, etc. files & folders when SFC and SURT find issues.

    Additionally, in reference to the above post, I ALWAYS scan/check website and software via several methods to insure no malware, adware, virus, etc. is along for the ride!

    I've always just opened a command prompt window and used DIR. DIR /s might not be as fast as other tools but it's universal and does the job.

    My go to program is UltraSearch:

    https://www.jam-software.com/ultrasearch/

    It can,very fast, search a folder, a drive, or all your drives.

    It doesn't search the files' contents, which works for me.
