    Java updates???

Hi - have been having trouble with JAVA updates 6 24 all afternoon - Dell E6500 froze as soon as Java update appeared in task bar and said update was available.. needed to be switched off via on/off button to restart! On restarting (many times this happened) same problem re-occurred, went to Java and installed this update manually. Now most programmes hang after about a minute.. itunes starts music but not finishes (freezes after about 1 min playing), as does any musuc played through media player, Mozilla not load, Chrome not load... But from a quick check MS WORD and POWERPOINT OK... Even TASKMANAGER freezes!

    Any help PLEASE??

    Thanks in adavcne

Hello Kenn and welcome to Seven Forums.

Try going into Control Panel > Program and Features. Scroll down to Java > left click to highlight > uninstall (or right-click > uninstall). Once you have it removed from your machine, try downloading and installing directly from the Java website.

    java.com: Java + You

Let us know if this helps. Sometimes installing from a link isn't as successful as from the manufacturers site directly. And if I understand your post, you might have tried to reinstall manually over an existing copy of 6.24.

    Java Updates

Hi - and thank you for your rapid response...much appreciated.. have uninstalled the JAVA update and windows just hangs again before I can re-install... (Message is that windows is not responding, and am still waiting!!). Just a blank screen now!!!

Will reboot by switching off and see what happens when it re-boots...

    Thanks again

    Cheers

Maybe you should check to see if your computer has any old versions of Java that might have been left behind (by the updating process.) JavaRa can do that and help you remove them too: Software | RaProducts

Use the "Remove older versions" and then "additional tasks" to remove old redundant Java files. Once it has done this, try reinstalling the latest Java version.

Fayla's suggestion is worth a try. Just out of curiosity, are you having the same issues with other downloads (Windows is not responding?) As an experiment, try downloading and installing something like CCleaner. (Make sure you read each prompt so you don't accidentally install a Google toolbar or some other unnecessary or unneeded application.)

CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

If you have any problems D/Ling or installing CCleaner then perhaps the issue isn't with Java but something else with your computer. If CCleaner installs OK, you could try running the cleaner portion to remove old files, etc (the default settings are fine).

Thank you - now looking more like a WINDOWS problem?? Computer hangs after about 4 mins of operation regardless of what I'm doing (but some tasks do seem to be OK....). Can't resume/restore system to an earlier date nor can I back up files that I've created today!! Maybe I will have to re-install windows uisng the discs provided?

    Cheers

We seemed to have typed over each other. Sorry.

Before resorting to a reinstall you might want to try System File Checker. This utility scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect, corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If that doesn't work, try a Repair Install. This should preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.
