Enabling “Do not preserve zone information in file attachments”?

When I view the properties of files I download from the Internet, it says:

“This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer”

I’ve never noticed this has caused any problems\difficulties for me, in the 6 months I’ve used this PC.

But from what I’ve read it sounds like it could cause annoyances and doesn’t really do anything.

So I want to know how to disable it. (Unless there’s a good reason to keep it running?)

From what I’ve read, ordinarily you’d go to GPEDIT.MSC (Local Group Policy Editor) and then enable “Do not preserve zone information in file attachments”

However I have 7 home “premium” so I can’t use GPEDIT.MSC, and have to change the registry instead.

How can I enable “Do not preserve zone information in file attachments” manually through the registry?

    Thanks.

    Hello Retspag,

Here are the REG files attached below to this with instead.

Description of how the Attachment Manager works in Windows XP Service Pack 2

    Hope this helps,

    Excellent thank you!

I’m still trying to decide whether or not to turn it off though,
What would you recommend to your average semi-expert PC user, and what do you have it set to on your own PC and why?

BTW I just want to say I really appreciate what you do here, your "Disable_Windows_Explorer_Auto_Arrange.reg" is a life saver.

    You're most welcome. :)

For the average person I would say leave it set at default and not disable it since this is a security feature, and since you can always just manually unblock a file on a file to file basis.

I think I'll leave it as is unless it starts getting in my way.
It's new to me because my last PC used FAT32 hard drives, and I guess they don't use zone information tracking.

If I ever do want to implement it though, what do I do just double click on "Do_Not_preserve_zone_information_in_file_attachments.reg " or do I have to do something else?

Yep, after double clicking on the REG file to merge it, you'll just have to click on a few prompts to approve it.
