    Hello Extreme,

What type of noise is the hard drive making? (ex: grinding, squelling, vibration, etc....)

Depending on the noise it is making, this usually is an indication that your hard drive is about to die. I would strongly recommend that you back up anything that you do not want to lose to be safe, and may need to replace the hard drive with a new one soon.

In BIOS there should be a setting for HD, either performance or quiet. It makes the drive more quiet and doesn't seem to affect performance.

the adjustment on a dell is called the HDD acoustic mode. Why not ask compaq if there is an adjustment like that?

    Hope this helps
