Is there a way to search within a window?

Are there any functions or 3rd party programs that would allow me to search for text within an individual window?

I am using a program that generates 1000's of pieces of data and information, and it has no search function.

Is there any thing out there that would do this?

hi tek0011, and welcome to sevenforums,

is it possible to ctrl-a (to select all), then paste everything into another program (eg notepad or better), and then search from there?

also, what is your program? - it may help us suggest solutions.

Listary may do what you want. There are both portable and installer versions (64-bit supported)?

Or try typing Ctrl-F into the program, sometimes that brings up a search function.

So this is a custom program (Not like using explorer or anything?) that is outputting tons of text in a long scrolling window?

If the program has no logging feature, which you could search the resulting log file in notepad or something. I would try to copy/paste the output window text into notepad and search it there.

I don't know of any addon that will arbitratily search text in just any window of any program. Though it sounds possible to write such a thing :) Would have been pretty easy on XP, may be much more difficult on 7.

Unfortunately, I cannot even ctrl-a to select all. Even if I could i think that way would take longer, for what I am trying to do.
It is a program specifically engineered for what we do at work.
Essentially there are 1000's of columns and rows, and I need to find certain columns and/or rows. Sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes just to locate, I am trying to get this down to 1-5 secs (if I had a search within a window, function).

I saw an Apple (ick) program that allowed to search within an actual window itself. Unfortunately I cannot find a similar program for Windows.

Thanks for your reply and any following thoughts/ideas.

in most programs, you can click on a column, and that will sort alphabetically under that column, making things easier to find..

i suppose it all depends on how the software was written in the first place.

a lengthy painful workaround would be to take screenshots, then ocr them...

No one is left that can modify the app to add a search function? :)

Actually I would love to have an external window text/list capture/search utility. Could grab lists of files from explorer for example, without having to drop to the command line to get the sameinfo into a text file :)

You may need to add the application via the Listary options (just getting used to it myself).
