hi tek0011, and welcome to sevenforums,

is it possible to ctrl-a (to select all), then paste everything into another program (eg notepad or better), and then search from there?

also, what is your program? - it may help us suggest solutions.
Unfortunately, I cannot even ctrl-a to select all. Even if I could i think that way would take longer, for what I am trying to do.
It is a program specifically engineered for what we do at work.
Essentially there are 1000's of columns and rows, and I need to find certain columns and/or rows. Sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes just to locate, I am trying to get this down to 1-5 secs (if I had a search within a window, function).

I saw an Apple (ick) program that allowed to search within an actual window itself. Unfortunately I cannot find a similar program for Windows.

Thanks for your reply and any following thoughts/ideas.
What sort of window is it? Just a list box? Are the items static?

Can you save the contents to a file?

If so, there are various ways to search it. But I need to know what sort of window it is before making suggestions.

    Regards....Mike Connor

The items semi static. lol. Its just like any other company made program. the contents can be saved to a file, which I can then search, but again I am trying to streamline this. Just a screen scraper of some type.

Listary might work, im digging into it, but it keeps crashing.

I've been using the portable x64 version for a few days and it's worked perfectly? You don't have to use the hot key, when the window is in focus just start typing a query and it should appear instantly...

OK. If you can save to a file you can search it easily.

    Try this first;

dngrep - dnGREP - Google Project Hosting

also, if it is just an ascii file, you can search it using any plain text editor with a search function. For many files you can just open them in Firefox and use various search functions there.

Try WinGrep if Listary doesn't work.

have tried this, but it seems to only search files. I need it to search the current window I am in.

Crazy this hasn't been written yet....

Even crazier our engineers didnt incorporate a search function in the program.

thanks for the idea. however, I am attempting to do this w/o having to copy and paste the information elsewhere. My search continues. MacOS has one, how does Windows not. Listary is close to doing what I want it to, but I cant get it to work with certain windows.
