Ahh, I get ya now. But that would imply that you have a valid Vista license, which works for you. I think most people having to upgrade from XP is because they did not get Vista. But yeah, that should work if you're in that situation. Cool.

This thread has taken a right turn..... I don't know about the karma thing but I'll skip that for now.

Back to the original thread..... I am going through the XP to Win7 upgrade (via Vista) as I type this. I'll post the results but Vista is installing right now without a key as an upgrade to XP. When that is done, I will upgrade Vista to Win7 X86 7260. If that works, then I have no doubts that the XP -> Vista -> Win7 Retail upgrade will work with all XP Settings preserved.
You should have 100% no problems as long as you did the online compatibility check, removed all that was request. Turn off the Firewall and Disable or remove the AV... I have done the same thing your doing so many times, it is almost automatic... ea new os sees the old OS installes and auto allows upgrade. Currently I have not see a unmodified version of Win7 to allow the actual upgrade from XP or 2000. Doing it your way works, takes time but it will work.
each time run the online compability checker and follow instructions.
also since win 3.0 95% of all upgrades were abused by AV and FW settings. it takes very little time to reinstall.

I used a Vista disk from a previous install but did not have to enter a 25-digit code and hence could have borrowed it from anyone.
