Then a clean install has never been done on your system? But you do have a recovery disc, right?
Clean install not done by me, no. That's why I've said I returned it to factory settings .. not reformatted.

When we first got the computer my husband made recovery disks; there are four of them. Does that sound right? I have no idea how to use them, and would prefer not to, as I suspect I'd fluff it up (I think evidence points to my ability to do this).

Apologies for intruding...but have you tried to (link-->) Take Ownership (<--link) of the D:\ drive. Especially if the drive was under previous use by another username. This may or may not solve your problem. Please note the warnings against using this on your system drive!

Oooo ... not done that no James. I'll bookmark it and try it in the morning. That way if it doesn't work I can do the whole reinstall thing afterwards. Thank you :)

Sorry for the delay in updating .. I couldn't remember my username lol.

Good news! The problem (for which I posted originally) is sorted out! I had a hunch that it was because when I returned C: to factory settings I had given the computer a different name. And indeed, when I changed it back again, no problem with the D drive anymore.

Just to sort out the rest of the problems now

Thanks for all of your help guys.

I'll take that as a hint to give you rep lol. I was wondering why you'd pointed it to me for a moment there
